Today marked a beautiful collaboration as students from Nanyang Asia College visited the St Luke’s ElderCare Senior Care Centre in Bukit Batok for a heart-warming workshop titled: “Art for the New Year, Care with Warmth” (书画迎新春·关怀常在暖心间).

This joint activity was designed to celebrate the upcoming Lunar New Year through the timeless beauty of Chinese calligraphy and painting, while fostering deep connections between the youth and our silver generation.

Cultivating Creativity and Compassion

The event was more than just an art class; it was an exchange of culture and energy. The workshop focused on the traditional arts of Shu Hua (书画), where students and seniors worked hand-in-hand to create festive pieces.

Highlights of the Day:

• Intergenerational Mentorship: Students provided a helping hand to seniors, assisting with brushwork and ink preparation, while seniors shared their life wisdom and stories of New Years past.

• A “Warmth” Centric Approach: True to the theme, the atmosphere was filled with laughter and mutual respect, embodying the spirit of community care that both institutions champion.

• Cultural Preservation: By engaging in traditional calligraphy, the younger generation gained a deeper appreciation for heritage, guided by the very people who have carried these traditions for decades.

  

Strengthening Community Bonds

At Nanyang Asia College, we believe that education extends beyond the classroom. Engaging with the residents at St Luke’s ElderCare allows our students to develop empathy, social responsibility, and a “heart for service.”

For the seniors at the Bukit Batok centre, these interactions provide vital social stimulation and a sense of joy, which are essential components of active ageing and mental well-being.
